A new study conducted at the University of Glasgow examined the ' age, health and treat more than 10,000 patients in 25 hospitals across Scotland .

The results of the survey, the first of its kind in the world , showed that 28.8 % of patients likely to die within 12 months of hospitalization , and therefore a better and more work needs to be done to recognize when patients are nearing the end of their life and palliative care needs .

Of the 10,743 patients , the majority ( 64.1 %) were aged 65 years and over . 54.7% were women, 45.3% men.

The survey found that men hospitalized are more likely to die than women in most age groups. The mortality rate has dramatically increased with age and was more than three times a year for patients aged 85 and over compared to those who were under 60 .

Professor David Clark, Head of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Glasgow said : "Until now there has been a dearth of information on the proportion of the hospital population and therefore on how policies and hospital services may be directed to their needs. We were able to link the hospital records to the records of death to get an exact figure . a surprising result was that 9% of patients in hospital is calculated at all times of the year , he will die in the hospital . "

The study was conducted to address the growing challenge of the aging population and the need for more palliative care services for patients nearing the end of their lives.

Published in " Palliative Medicine ," the study states that the role of hospitals in the planning of such care is of great importance.

The probability of dying in hospital varies from one country to another, but is generally high . A recent study in Scotland ranking in 12th place out of 36 countries for the proportion of all deaths that occur in hospital.
