Researchers at Northwestern University (Illinois, USA), report that when adults of 30-40 years decide to quit unhealthy habits that are harmful to their health, in particular cardiovascular, and embrace a healthy lifestyle, they can control and potentially even reverse the risk of heart disease and also the natural progression of coronary artery disease.

Bonnie Spring and colleagues examined the relationship between a healthy lifestyle and coronary artery calcification in more than 5,000 study participants: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA): Participants were assessed at baseline (ie, when were aged between 18 to 30 years) and 20 years later.
The factors to be considered healthy lifestyle and evaluated were: not being overweight / obese, do not smoke, be physically active, have a low intake of alcohol and practice a healthy diet.

At a young age (at the beginning of the study), less than 10% of participants reported taking all five healthy habits. After 20 years, about 25% of the study participants had added at least one health behavior. 40% of the study group, over time, has abandoned the healthy behavior and acquired bad habits, leading to measurable and negative impacts on their arteries and coronary arteries.

The research team found that each increase of factors of healthy lifestyle was associated with reduced rates of detectable coronary calcification and thickness - two important markers of cardiovascular disease that may predict future cardiovascular events.

The authors of the study conclude that: "Changes in lifestyle during adulthood are associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. Changing you can, and you must."
