Diets high in fat have long been known to increase the risk of health problems, including heart disease and stroke
, but there is growing concern that these diets can also increase the risk of depression and other psychiatric disorders.

Annadora J. Bruce-Keller, the Louisiana State University (Louisiana, USA), and colleagues used a mouse model to assess the changes in the gut microbiome - the bacteria that reside in the gastrointestinal tract, and the ability to snap the susceptibility to neuropsychiatric disorders. Adult mice were not obese conventionally housed and maintained on a normal diet, but have received a transplant of intestinal flora of donor mice that had been fed a diet high in fat or a control diet. The recipient mice were then assessed for changes in behavior and cognition.

Animals that received microbiota shaped by a high-fat diet showed more disruptions in behavior, including increased anxiety, memory problems and repetitive behaviors. Also, animals fed the high-fat diet showed many adverse effects on the body, including increased intestinal permeability and inflammation markers. The signs of inflammation in the brain were also evident and may have contributed to changes in behavior.

Noting that: "The mice that were fed the high-fat diet had significant disruptions and selective in exploratory behavior, cognitive, and stereotypical," the study authors concluded that: "These data reinforce the link between intestinal dysbiosis and dysfunction neurological and suggest that dietary manipulation and / or pharmacological intestinal microbiota could mitigate the neurological complications of obesity."
