Gratitude is part of a broader vision of life that is based on the note and appreciate the positive aspects of life. It may be attributed to an external source: another person or entity (such as happens in spirituality).

Studies conducted in the past suggest that people who had more spiritual greater general well-being, including health physics.

Paul J. Mills of the University of California / San Diego (California, USA), and colleagues explored the role of spirituality and gratitude health in patients with heart problems. The study involved 186 men and women who had been diagnosed with heart failure asymptomatic (Phase B - structural damage, but no symptoms). The team used standard psychological tests to obtain scores for evaluating the gratitude and spiritual well-being. They then compared the scores with scores of depressed patients with severe symptoms, with regard to: sleep, fatigue, self-efficacy (the belief in an ability to deal with a situation) and inflammatory markers. Data analysis revealed that people with higher scores gratitude had a better mood, sleep quality, more self-efficacy and less inflammation.

In further research, the researchers asked some patients to write down three things you are grateful, every day of the week for eight weeks. Both groups continued to receive regular medical care during that time. Patients who have maintained unchanged the feeling of gratitude for these eight weeks experienced a significant reduction in the levels of some markers of inflammation, as well as an increase in heart rate variability, while they wrote their daily notes.

"We note that the gratitude and spiritual well-being are linked to a better mood and sleep, less fatigue and more self-efficacy" say the authors of the study "The ways of raising gratitude may be a valid treatment to improve the well-being of patients "
