Modern medicine and biomedical technologies provide long lifespan, and many people aged 80 years and more continue to live independently.

Alexander K. Smith, of the University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues examined the relationship between disability and age.

The researchers analyzed data collected on 8,232 subjects who participated in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a longitudinal study that assesses over the years the changes in health and lifestyle in people over the age of 50 years. Disability was defined as "the need for assistance in any one or more of the six activities of daily living, namely: dressing, bathing, eating, getting in or getting out of bed, walking into a room, go to the toilet."

The prevalence of disability has increased significantly over the last 2 years of life.
At 24 months before death, 46% of the participants had difficulty in performing daily activities, 28% reported a disability, and 12% a severe disability. In the last month of life, the numbers were changed in this way: 68%, 56% and 40%, respectively.

Most of the participants had particular difficulty in walking and climbing stairs. According to the authors: "More than a third of all older adults in need of assistance as a result of disability years before his death, and, in particular, more than a quarter of two years before his death."

The average age at death of the participants in the analysis was 85.8 years, the most common causes of death were: weakness (28.1%), organ failure (20.8%), and cancer (18, 5%).

The authors of the study conclude that: "Those who live longer at greater risk of disability, and therefore have greater need of assistance, months or years before the morte.E 'important to our health care system and society to know the relationship between age and disability, so that they can intervene appropriately to support.
