Over the past 50 years, researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy have followed the health of 855 men born in Gothenburg in 1913. Ten of those involved have exceeded 100 years interesting conclusions can be drawn from the secrets of their longevity.

27% (232 people) of the original group lived until the age of 80 years and 13% (111 people) up to 90. While 1.1% of the subjects reached 100 years.

According to the study, 42% of deaths after the age of 80 years was due to cardiovascular disease, 20% in infectious diseases, 8% in stroke, 8% in cancer, pneumonia, and 6% to 16% other causes. 23% of the over-80 group was also diagnosed with a type of dementia.

"This study allowed us to identify the factors affecting survival, after 50 years," says Lars Wilhelmsen, a researcher who was involved in the study for the last 50 years. "Our recommendation to people who aspire to become centenarian is not smoking, keeping cholesterol levels low and limited to four cups of coffee a day."

Other factors: the longevity of the mother, the socio-economic content. "Our results indicate that there is a correlation with the longevity of the mother but not the father, as also emerged from previous studies," says Dr. Wilhelmsen. "Given that these organizations have been demonstrated in a study conducted in Hawaii, the genetic factor seems to be strong, but less influential than other factors"

2 of centenarians dropped out of the study due to dementia, 1 for personal reasons. With regard to other 7:

2 lived in the house and 5 in assisted living facilities
    None of them smoked
Everyone had a good time and spatial cognition
    All wore hearing aids
Most wore glasses, which you can read and watch TV
All of them were lean and had good posture
    All of them walked regularly

Says Dr. Wilhelmsen: "All centenarians were clinically healthy, satisfied with their situation and happy to be in the condition they were in"
