The reduction of six risk factors for health could prevent 37 million deaths from chronic diseases in 15 years.

Reduce or hold six risk factors: tobacco use , alcohol consumption , salt intake , the ' high blood pressure, high blood glucose and obesity - could prevent more than 37 million premature deaths in 15 years around the world , reducing the four major non-communicable diseases (NCDs ) : cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, cancer and diabetes, which are the cause of many deaths each year .

And ' what emerges from a new research published in The Lancet .

Conversely, the results indicate that the non- achievement of these objectives would result in 38.8 million deaths in 2025 for the four major non-communicable diseases , 10.5 million deaths more than the 28.3 million deaths in 2010: 25% more than in 2010.

This is the first study to analyze the impact that the reduction of risk factors at the global level would reduce premature deaths from NCDs .

Using national data on deaths and risk factors and epidemiological models , Professor Majid Ezzati of Imperial College London , UK, and colleagues estimated the number of deaths that could be avoided between 2010 and 2025 , reducing the weight of each of the six risk factors agreed .

Overall, the results suggest that the achievement of the objectives for all six risk factors would reduce the risk of dying prematurely from the four major non-communicable diseases by 22% in men and 19% for women in 2025 , compared to 2010. Throughout the world , this improvement is equivalent to delaying or preventing at least 16 million deaths in people aged 30-70 years and 21 million in those older than 70 years.

The authors predict that the greatest benefits will come from reducing high blood pressure and tobacco use . They calculate that an ambitious 50% reduction in the prevalence of smoking by 2025, would reduce the risk of dying prematurely by over 24 % in men and 20% in women.

According to Professor Ezzati "Most of the benefits will be seen in individuals in low-income and middle-income countries : in these countries could be prevented as many as 31 million deaths "
