Long working hours are often accompanied by an increase in mental stress and sometimes even physical.

Mika Kivimaki, of University College London (UK) and colleagues have completed a large systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies and other unpublished data that examine the effects of working time on the cardiovascular system.

Have they considered 17 studies for a total of 528.908 men and women who were followed for an average of 7.2 years. It found a 1.3 times higher risk of stroke in those participants who worked 55 hours or more per week, compared to those who have worked 35-40 hours (after adjusting for confounding variables).

In addition, the analysis of 25 studies with a total of 603.838 men and women who were followed for an average of 8.5 years, found an increased risk of 13% of coronary heart disease among the participants who worked 55 hours or more a week, compared to those who have worked 35-40 hours.

Noting that: "The persne working long hours have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease ictuse of those working on a number of standard hours." The authors urge that: "These results suggest that more attention be paid to the management of vascular risk factors in people who work a lot."
