Healthy food choices conducted for a lifetime , or even from middle age may prevent dementia in later years.
And ' what emerges from a doctoral thesis published at the University of Eastern Finland . The results showed that those who have adopted a healthier diet at a mean age of 50 had a risk of almost 90% less dementia than those who practiced a less healthy diet . The study was the first in the world to investigate the relationship between a healthy diet already in middle age and the risk of developing dementia later.

The researchers assessed the link between diet and dementia using an index of healthy eating based on the consumption of a variety of foods : vegetables, fruits, fish , unsaturated fats from dairy products ... were some of the healthy components , while sausages, eggs , sweets, sugary drinks , saturated fat from dairy products ... were listed as unhealthy.

Previous studies on diet and dementia have focused mainly on the impact of individual components of the diet. "But the diet of no person is based on a single food , and there may be interactions between nutrients. So it makes more sense to look at the whole dietary pattern , "says Marjo Eskelinen , who presented the results of his doctoral thesis.


The impact of dietary fats on cognitive performance and the risk of dementia has also been studied separately. A high consumption of saturated fat is linked to lower cognitive function and memory poorer and with an increased risk of mild cognitive impairment . It was also shown that a higher consumption of saturated fats has been associated with an increased risk of dementia among those who have a genetic risk factor of Alzheimer's disease .
