Enjoy a hearty breakfast can help a person to eat fewer calories at lunch.

Allan Geliebter, of Columbia University Medical Center (New York, USA), and colleagues enrolled 36 men and women (18 lean, 18 overweight) who consumed a breakfast of 350 calories consisting of: carbohydrates, oatmeal quick to cook or sweetened corn flakes; breakfast or a control (water only).

The subjects were evaluated for feelings of hunger or fullness after breakfast and lunch up to (3 hours later). At the same time, the team hamisurato: blood glucose, insulin, leptin, glucagon, and an indicator of gastric emptying.
The subjects who consumed the oatmeal for breakfast reported higher ratings of fullness and lower rating of hunger, and consumed 31% fewer calories at lunch. The overall effect of satiety was even greater among overweight subjects, who consumed 50% fewer calories at lunch after eating oatmeal for breakfast.

The researchers conclude that: "A hearty breakfast, rich in carbohydrates (preferably wholegrain) increases satiety, reduces the feeling of hunger and reduces the calories of the meal."
