Supplements for Cardiovascular System

Add flavor to vegetables, fish and meat, with herbs and spices, it can help improve the values of some biomarkers of blood linked to heart health.

Sheila G. West, PhD, of The Pennsylvania State University (Pennsylvania, USA), and colleagues analyzed six men, aged between 30 and 65, who were overweight, but healthy. The meals, eaten in two separate days, were identical - chicken, bread, and dessert - but the test meal also included the addition of two tablespoons of a mixture of spices. Spices included garlic powder, rosemary, oregano, cinnamon, cloves, paprika, turmeric, ginger and black pepper. The team monitored the blood markers for three hours after each meal. The antioxidant activity in the blood increased by 13% after the subjects ate a test meal enriched with spices, while the postprandial insulin decreased by 21% and triglycerides by 31%.

The study authors say: "Spices and herbs are rich in compounds that can reduce inflammation and improve blood factors associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease."
