Supplements for Cognitive System

One of the consequences of aging is the deterioration of cognitive functions - memory, processing speed and ability to form long-term memories.

Daniela Mastroiacovo, from SS Philip and Nicholas Hospital (Italy), and colleagues enrolled 90 men and women, aged 61-85 years, with no evidence of cognitive dysfunction, in one study, participants were assigned to one of three groups: the one with the consumption of a beverage with a percentage of cocoa flavanols high (993 mg), medium (520 mg) or low (48 mg) each day for eight weeks. Normal diets and regular lifestyle were maintained during the study.

At baseline and after eight weeks, cognitive function was assessed using a battery of tests that examined memory, retention, recall, anointing executive. Among people who regularly consumed both high is the average amount of flavanols, the researchers observed significant improvements in overall cognitive function after only eight weeks.

In addition to assessing cognitive function, the team also assessed insulin resistance, blood pressure and other metabolic markers - that have shown improvements: in the groups with high and medium content of flavanols, both systolic blood pressure is the diastolic were reduced and insulin resistance was significantly improved.
In contrast, only a modest improvement in diastolic blood pressure was observed in the low flavanol content, while there have been significant improvements in both the systolic blood pressure is in insulin resistance.

The study authors write that: "This study provides evidence that a regular intake of cocoa flavanols can reduce the consumption of some measures of cognitive dysfunction related to age, probably through an improvement in insulin sensitivity. These data suggest that habitual intake of flavanol can support cognitive function with age."
