Several previous studies indicate a link between the consumption of whole grains and reduced risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

People who eat more whole grains may live longer and have less chance of dying from heart disease.
This is the thesis that they faced some researchers in a recent study.

Qi Sun, of Harvard School of Public Health (Massachusetts, USA), and colleagues analyzed data on 74,341 women enrolled in the Nurses Health Study between 1984 and 2010 and 43 744 men enrolled in Professionals Follow-Up Study between 1986 and 2010.
Considering the 27,000 deaths by 2010, subjects who reported eating more whole grains have had almost 10% less likely to die during the study, compared to those who reported eating less. Every 28 grams of whole grains per day, the risk of death decreased by 5% and the risk of death from heart disease by 9%.

Noting that: "These data indicate that the consumption of unrefined wheat is associated with lower total mortality and heart disease in men and women, independent of other dietary factors and lifestyle," the study authors conclude that: "These results are in line with the recommendations seen so far, that promote increased consumption of whole grains to facilitate the prevention of disease."
