Numerous previous studies have shown the ability of fresh avocado reduce the risk factors for diabetes and heart disease, being a good source of monounsaturated fatty acids.

One study involved 45 healthy adults, overweight, aged between 21 and 70 years. Penny M. Kris-Etherton, from Pennsylvania State University (Pennsylvania, USA), and colleagues tested three different diets, all designed to lower cholesterol: a diet low in fat, composed of 24% fat, and two fat diets with moderate, with 34% fat.

Diets with moderate amounts of fat were almost identical, but a diet provided for the consumption of a fresh avocado every day, while the other was based on a similar amount of oleic acid, contained for example in olive oil. Whereas all three diets have proved capable of significantly lowering the low-density lipoprotein (LDL, "bad cholesterol"), as well as total cholesterol, only those who have followed the diet avocado showed a reduction still increased LDL and total cholesterol.

The diet that included the consumption of avocado reduced bad cholesterol of 13.5 mg / dL, and was reduced to 8.3 mg / dL in the second diet with moderate fat and 7.4 mg / dL in the diet low fats.
Researchers hano concluded that: "The inclusion of an avocado a day, as part of a moderate-fat, has beneficial effects on cardio-metabolic risk factors that are beyond their profile of healthy fatty acids."
