Cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli are particularly rich in nutrients that can fight oxidative stress

.

These are the results of a study published in Nutrition and Cancer which confirm the ability of these plants, belonging to the family of the Brassicacea, to counteract the damages caused by an excess of free radicals in the body, due to their high content of isothiocyanates, aromatic compounds containing sulfur responsible for their typical smell, vitamin C, B, PP, provitamin A and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, iron and potassium.

The study involved 20 males, smokers and non, that were submitted for ten consecutive days, the daily intake of 200 micromoles of sulfurafane, in addition to the normal diet.

After a period of interruption of 20 days, each participant has again adopted, for 10 days, the usual food without isothiocyanates.

At the end of the analysis, in subjects who followed the diet supplemented with sulfurafano, there has been a significant improvement in parameters of oxidative damage to the DNA level; improvement was particularly evident in smokers.
