Is was recently released Osservasalute 2010 Report on health status and quality of the Italian regions. The picture that emerges is not very reassuring.

In Italy on the basis of anecdotal evidence suggests that more than one third of the adult population (35.5%) are overweight and one in 10 is obese. In total, 45.5% of the population between 18 and 69 years is in a condition of excess weight. It ossera also an important North-South gradient: meriodionali regions have the highest prevalence of overweight people than the northern ones. Over the past eight years, the percentage of overweight adults has steadily increased. Even more disturbing is the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children. In this study, the results indicate that 23% of children between 7 and 10 are overweight and 11% obese .1. All this is in addition a strong tendency aging of the population which is accompanied by a deterioration of health.

Do you think that in Italy every year about 50,000 deaths are attributable to obesity. The metabolic consequences of being overweight are all the more serious as many years overweight lives the subject. This tells us that fat children will almost certainly have serious consequences on their health in adulthood. At an early age often these children have respiratory problems, joint pain, gastrointestinal difficulties and a negative impact on the psychological and character. Over the years, then this will greatly increase their risk of diabetes, heart attack, stroke and even cancer. In this sense, it is essential to raise awareness among parents and educate them to a new power management family and lifestyle of themselves and their children.

Another fact that emerges from the dramatic relationship between health is that regular sporting affects less than 31.1% of the population. In practice 4 of 10 Italians are completely sedentary. And this is not just an Italian problem. The World Health Organization estimated that levels of physical activity are declining around the world, especially among young people. In Italy, only 1 in 10 children are exercising properly for his age and 1 child of 2 watch TV or play video games for more than 3 hours a day.

But we were not the country of the Mediterranean diet?
Our food culture was not to be, by definition, protection from the excesses of industrialized diet?
There have always said, experts and dieticians included a varied and balanced diet is all that we need?

Alas the picture is very different. First, the Mediterranean diet described as protective and healthy by many scientific studies is as follows today the majority of Italians. In fact, it is based on a lot of vegetables and fruits in season, caught fish, nuts, seeds, legumes, olive oil and whole grain carbohydrates. So if anything is eaten in Greece and Turkey, but not in Italy. With us we have only good olive oil. Then the Italians have gradually increased their intake of refined carbohydrates such as bread, pizza, pasta, rice, taking into account the much more rarely healthy full versions. Furthermore, you make more and more use of cheese and dairy products that end up substituting vegetables and legumes. And then the sweet, sugar in coffee, jam in the morning and many other small flaws that, if added together they become a problem.

The rules to resume feeding are simple:

1) Reduce the glycemic load avoiding sugars and sweets and replacing refined carbohydrates (bread, pasta and rice) with the full versions.

2) Reduce a little 'intake of complex carbohydrates in favor of vegetables and protein (fish caught, good source of meat, eggs, legumes)

3) Reduce milk and dairy products

4) Take freely olive oil and add the omega 3

5) Take a multivitamin

6) Pay attention to the origin, processing and preservation of foods
