A high percentage of tumors that arise in the breast, prostate, pancreas, colon, and the rest of the gastrointestinal tracts are adenocarcinomas. A number of previous studies suggest that approaches that decrease the activity of the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), may prevent the genesis and progression of adenocarcinomas.

James J. Di Nicolantonio, Hospital of San Luca (Missouri, USA), and colleagues observed that a large intake of omega 3 fats, found in fish, may be able to object to the COX-2.

The researchers report that not only the amount of fish consumed per week, but also the nature of this fish, and how it is stored and cooked, to have a major impact on the potential of the fish in reducing the risk of cancer.

The study authors conclude: "Our analyzes reveal that the consumption ideal fish (not fried or preserved) is 2 or more servings per week: supplementation of fish oil is a valuable aid in the long term to counter the risk of cancer."
