Astaxanthin supplements

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid present in salmon pink-orange and has been shown in some studies to have antioxidant effects.

Ivana Baralic, the Sports Medicine Association of Serbia (Serbia), and colleagues administered astaxanthin (4 grams) per day, or placebo, to 40 young soccer players Serbia for 90 days. The team observed that the men taking astaxanthin showed a significant attenuation of muscle damage and subsequent inflammation. In addition, the group that received astaxanthin showed beneficial effects on the immune system: higher salivary IgA - an immunoglobulin which maintains the integrity of the immune system and is involved in muscle function.

The study's authors argue that: "The supplementation of astaxanthin reduces muscle damage, thus preventing inflammation induced by intense physical training. Our results also indicate that astaxanthin might show significant modulation physiological mucosal immunity in individuals with compromised or in conditions of increased oxidative stress and inflammation.
