Probiotic supplements

There is
a great interest from the scientific researchers about the possibility of using probiotic bacteria for the treatment of skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis.

Hiromi Kimoto-Nira, PhD, of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) Institute of Livestock and Grassland Science (NILGS) in Japan, and colleagues conducted a randomized, double-blind trial to evaluate the effects of fermented milk products using Lactococcus lactis strain H61 as a starter bacterium (H61-fermented milk) on the health of the skin of young women and overall health. 23 healthy young women aged 19 to 21 years who received milk with H61 or traditional yogurt for 4 weeks.

Blood samples were taken before and at the end of the period of 4 weeks, and were measured skin hydration, the melanin content, the elasticity, and the content of sebum. The results showed that skin hydration was increased in both groups, while the content of sebum in the cheek increased significantly in the group that took milk with H61, but not in the group that took over traditional yogurt.

The authors concluded: "As the skin lipids help maintain the skin barrier, with milk H61 may provide beneficial effects on the skin for young women."
