Garcinia mangostana owes its activity in the presence of xanthones. This class, similar to polyphenols derived from benzo-gamma-pyrone, has multiple pharmacological properties. In particular, the gamma mangostin appears to be the most active with strong antioxidant and radical scavenging.






The mangosteen ("Garcinia mangostana"), is a fruit belonging to the ancient family of Guttiferae and is native to the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas Archipelago, ancher if best plantations are now in Thailand. The fruit is round in shape and has an intense purple color. Its diameter ranges from 3.7 to 7.5 cm.

Early studies of this fruit dates back to 1932 and then continued in the following decades, until the researchers were able to isolate xanthones, which were studied properties. Xanthones represent a class of biologically active compounds. There are about 200 species in the wild and in only mangosteen, have been identified as many as 40. But not only. In the fruit are also numerous other compounds, such as catechins, polyphenols, vitamins B1, B2, B6, C, potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus and fiber (each serving of mangosteen contains up to 5 grams of fiber).
