Magnesium supplements

Abundant in green leafy vegetables, legumes and tofu, magnesium is involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions in the human body.

DT Dibaba, of Indiana University (Indiana, USA), and colleagues reviewed six published studies involving a total of 24,473 participants and 6,311 cases of metabolic syndrome.
The average intakes of magnesium from the subjects examined ranged 117-423 mg daily.

The analysis of the data revealed that subjects with the highest levels of magnesium intake had 31% lower risk of developing metabolic syndrome, compared to those with lower levels of intake. In addition, each 100 mg per day in more than magnesium, reduce the overall risk of developing metabolic syndrome by 17%.

The study authors state that: "The results of this meta-analysis indicate that the intake of dietary magnesium is inversely associated with the presence of metabolic syndrome."
