A large number of previous studies suggest a wide range of health benefits if you adopt a high fiber diet: benefits that affect cardiovascular health, the gastrointestinal, and beyond.

The researchers of the consortium InterAct analyzed data collected by the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study of 29,000 men and women with type-2, residents in eight European countries, who were followed for an average of 10 , 8 years.

The analysis of the data revealed that people with the highest total intake of fiber - 26 g per day or more - they had a 18% lower risk of developing diabetes, compared to those with the lowest total fiber intake (19 g per day or less). As well, the risk for diabetes fell by 9% for every 10 g per day increase in intake of total fiber.

The study's authors argue that: "Our analysis indicates that intake of cereal fiber and total is inversely proportional to the risk of type 2 diabetes."
