Magnesium supplements

Magnesium is a mineral with an important role in glucose metabolism, in cellular energy production and in the production of proteins.

A research team led by Yanni Papanikolaou (France), and colleagues collected data on individuals aged 20 years and 80 years, enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), in the years 2001-2010. The team determined magnesium intake from foods and foods supplements, using the methods of the National Cancer Institute.

Adults with an adequate intake of magnesium from food had a different HOMA-IR - a measure of insulin resistance, systolic blood pressure, and HDL cholesterol, compared to individuals with inadequate intake of magnesium from food. Adults with an adequate intake of magnesium from food plus a supplement of magnesium had significant differences in waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, and HDL cholesterol.

The team observed that magnesium intake from all sources associated with significantly reduced or the risks of metabolic syndrome, overweight or obesity, high waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes.
