Poor cardiovascular health are linked to poor memory and learning deficits

The risk of developing cognitive impairment, in particular, problems of learning and memory problems, is significantly higher for people with bad poor cardiovascular health than people who enjoy a good or intermediate cardiovascular health. And 'because it appears in a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Cardiovascular health, therefore, plays a critical role in brain health, with several cardiovascular risk factors that affect the risk of cognitive decline.

The study involved 17,761 people aged 45 and over, with a normal cognitive function and no history of stroke. Their mental function was assessed then four years later. The study population included: men 45%, women 55%, blacks 42%, whites 58%.

The system used "Life's Simple 7" is a new system for measuring the benefits of health behaviors and risk factors in cardiovascular health, such as smoking, diet, physical activity, body mass index, blood pressure, total cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose. It ranks each of the seven factors of heart health as poor, intermediate or ideal.

After accounting for differences in age, sex, race and education, the researchers identified a cognitive deficit in:

       4.6% of people with the worst scores cardiovascular health;
       2.7% of those with intermediate health profiles;
       2.6% of those in the class with a better cardiovascular health.

Scores higher cardiovascular health were more common in people with higher education, higher income.

"An optimal cardiovascular health or intermediate promotes better cognitive function," said lead researcher Evan L. Thacker, Ph.D., assistant professor and epidemiologist at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. "This is an encouraging message for the intermediate cardiovascular health is a more realistic goal for most people than the ideal cardiovascular health."
