Known as the '"hormone of sexual desire," testosterone is a steroid hormone from the androgen group produced mainly by the Leydig cells in the testes and located, in small part, synthesized in the adrenal cortex.

Testosterone is also present in women, as an intermediate in the synthesis of estrogen.

Humans is deputy to the development of the sexual organs and secondary sexual characteristics, such as beard, hair distribution, the timbre of the voice and muscles. Testosterone, during puberty, also acts on the skeletal development, limiting the elongation of long bones and avoiding, in this way, a disproportionate growth of the limbs.

In adult men, testosterone levels have an important role with regard to the fertility, vitality and good health (mainly understood as protection from metabolic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus); helps to ensure fertility, as it acts on the maturation of sperm in the testes. It also affects the quality and quantity of sperm produced, since the seminal work on the streets and on the prostate, appointed to sperm production. The daily production of testosterone in men varies from 5 to 7 milligrams, but exceeded 30 years, tends to decrease annually by 1%.

Testosterone also regulates the desire, the erection and sexual satisfaction: has, in fact, the function of bringing in sync sexual desire with the sexual act itself, by adjusting the start and the end of the erection of the penis. A lack of libido (sexual desire) is often associated with a dysfunction of testosterone. This has also been highlighted for female sexual desire as a result of its reduction in the post-menopausal osteoporosis.

Testosterone levels in men gradually decrease over time, due to factors such as decreased activity, nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, and lack of HGH. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as andropause. At the age of 60 years, many people have less than half the level of testosterone compared to 25/30 years.

According to recent research, a low level of testosterone in men can lead to premature death. Researchers at the University of California / San Diego (USA) found that older men with low levels of testosterone may die sooner than their peers with normal testosterone levels. In addition, insufficient levels of testosterone promote abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome.

According to another survey, conducted by the Cambridge School of Medicine (Cambridge, UK): men with higher levels of testosterone tend to have greater longevity. The researchers monitored more of 11,600 British men for a period of 10 years. The team found that men with natural testosterone levels have a 25% higher risk of dying by 41% lower for heart attack, heart disease, stroke, cancer ... than men with the lowest testosterone levels.
