Bone density decreases with age, and - among women after menopause - this can increase the risk of osteoporosis, a major cause of bone fractures that may compromise the health and independent living.

Paivi Rauma, University of Eastern Finland (Finland), and colleagues analyzed data on 2,167 women born between 1931 and 1941, enrolled in the Kuopio Osteoporosis Risk Factor and Prevention (OSTPRE) Study.

These women underwent bone density measurements in 1999, and 1,147 individuals participated in the follow-up ten years later, in 2009. Life satisfaction was assessed by questions relating to: ease of life, happiness, solitude. Based on the responses, the study participants were divided into three groups: met, middle group and unsatisfied. The study focused on the possible effects of depression and other factors on bone health. During 10 years of follow-up, bone density of all the participants in the study has been weakened by an average of 4%; However, the difference between satisfied and dissatisfied people was remarkable.
Changes in life satisfaction during the 10 years of follow-up have impacted on bone density. In people whose life satisfaction has deteriorated, bone density has declined to 85% compared to individuals whose life satisfaction was better.

The study authors conclude that: "The life satisfaction and psychological aspects should be taken into account when it comes to the effects of 'aging and prevention of osteoporosis, as well as promoting health in postmenopausal women"
