Stem cells are cells of a particular type, different from any other type of cells present in living beings.

Unlike any other cell in the body, which may cease to reproduce, stem cells can theoretically continue to multiply without limit, to reproduce themselves or other cells.

Stem cells are classified according to the origin and all have the following three characteristics:

1. Stem cells are able to renew themselves, which means they can continue to divide and duplicate themselves for a long time and do not suffer changes in their characteristics.

2. Stem cells are not specialized, which means that they do not have a particular fabric nor perform a specialized function. (Do not carry oxygen as the blood cells, does not convey information, such as brain cells ...)

3. Stem cells give rise to specialized cells, which means they can become heart cells, brain cells, blood cells, etc..

The stem cells are classified according to the source of derivation, such as embryonic, fetal, amniotic and mature.

Scientists are fascinated by the ability of stem cells. Many researchers are working to isolate stem cells from different parts of the human body and use it to repair damaged organs: a few stem cells could induce an organ to deteriorate to stay healthy and fight the aging process and degeneration.

Many scholars argue that stem cells could revolutionize medicine.
