The d-ROMs test, the only test recommended by the international scientific community and the International Observatory of Oxidative Stress, is the only test currently available for the assessment of oxidative stress.
The acronym stands for d-ROMs "derivatives" of the "ROMs" or the "reactive oxygen metabolites" (reactive oxygen metabolites), the class to which they belong, in fact, hydroperoxides, but "d" is also the initial the producer, Diacron.
The d-ROMs test measures the ability "oxidant" of a plasma sample with regard to a particular substance (an aromatic amine modified) used as an indicator (chromogen). The phenomenon is associated with the gradual and progressive color change towards the pink of the reaction mixture (plasma + chromogen), initially colorless. The color change measured by a special device (photometer) which converts to a "number" the oxidizing capacity so determined. Help to determine the oxidative capacity measured by d-ROMs test especially alkoxy radicals and idroperossili, derived from hydroperoxides (ROOH).
In healthy subjects the d-ROMs has a value between 250 and 300 UNIT CARR (CARR U), which is also the range or normal range. Values greater than 300 U CARR are indicative of a state of oxidative stress. In this case, it will be the physician should determine, through the insertion of the test results in the clinical picture of each specific patient, what strategy should be put in place in order to bring to normal any outliers.
In general, high values of d-ROMs test are observed in subjects exposed to risk factors for oxidative stress (eg, cigarette smoking, alcohol abuse, inadequate exercise, how many diets / quality unbalanced etc..) Or pathologies associated with alterations of oxidative balance (eg. cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic syndrome, tumors, etc..) or treatments capable of increasing the level of oxidizing species (eg, oral contraceptives, radio / chemotherapy, dialysis, interventions by -pass, etc..).
