The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association have recently drawn up guidelines  aimed at helping doctors and patients to recognize the risk factors of stroke.

According to the report , stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in men and the third leading cause of death in women . Risk factors for stroke are: high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking.

But there are other factors that influence the risk of stroke in women. " They share many of the same risk factors for stroke in men, but in their case , the risk is also influenced by hormones , reproductive health , pregnancy, childbirth , and other factors related to sex ," said Cheryl Bushnell , author of published in the scientific journal of the American Heart Association journal Stroke .Many of these relate to the pregnancy. For example , women with a history of hypertension should take extra precautions during pregnancy , such as taking low-dose aspirin , and possibly a calcium supplement. This helps to reduce the risk of preeclampsia, a condition characterized by high blood pressure and protein in the urine that can cause stroke during or after childbirth and premature birth.

Similarly , women should be screened for hypertension before using birth control pills, because this combination increases the risk of stroke.

Other risk factors more common in women than in men include : migraine with aura , atrial fibrillation , diabetes, depression and emotional stress.

Dr. Shazam Hussain, of the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio , said: " Sure, there's something in common between men and women in terms of stroke risk factors , but there are also differences. Moreover, women tend more worse after a stroke and are more likely to die from stroke than men . "
