Nutraceutical, a term coined by Dr. Stephen De Felice in 1989, is a sincrasi from "nutrition" and "pharmaceutical" and refers to the study of foods that have beneficial effects on human health.

A nutraceutical is a "food-drug" or a health food that associated with nutritional components selected for characteristics such as high digestibility and hypoallergenic, the healing properties of natural active ingredients extracted from plants, proven and recognized effectiveness.

Many ancient cultures, including Indian, Egyptian, Chinese and Sumerians used food as medicine to treat in order to prevent disease. Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicine dating back five thousand years ago, cites the benefits of eating for therapeutic purposes. The father of medicine, Hippocrates said, "Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food"

The modern market for nutraceuticals began to develop in Japan during the 1980s. Here the nutraceutical industry has grown benefiting from modern technology.

The nutraceuticals are usually derived from plants, from food and microbial sources.

Examples of nutraceuticals are probiotics, antioxidants, polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3, omega-6), vitamins and enzyme complexes.

Typically are used to prevent chronic diseases, improve the health, delay the aging process and increase life expectancy.
