It aims to facilitate understanding, contributing to the structural stability of the fingers, protect the nail bed from trauma and infection. The nails are prerogatives of primates: humans, monkeys and lemurs.

Nail growth is weekly to monthly hands and feet. The growth reflects an influence daily and seasonal: nails grow more during the day and in the summer.

The nail is composed primarily of keratin and, in smaller percentages, acids, amino acids, water, vitamins and minerals. The hardness and strength of the nail is due to the presence of keratin. With aging there is a progressive calcification of the nails, which become more hard and resistant.

The structure of the nail:

lamina or "nail body", that is the part of the cornea;

nail matrix, hidden from the cuticle, responsible for the growth of the nail;

nail bed is the foundation upon which materially the nail. Healthy nail is adherent to the nail bed;

lunula, the near to half-moon shaped whitish. The color is given as it is the point of greatest pressure;

distal edge, the part of the nail which is detached from the nail bed;

iponichio also called "nail cuticle", which covers the most proximal part of the nail and protects it from external agents;

eponichio or "cuticle", is the protection of the skin which acts as a barrier to bacteria;

perionichio is the whole perimeter between iponichio and eponichio.

They have white spots: these lies, are likely due to a small growth defect, which leads to the interposition of tiny air bubbles between the corneocytes, and not to mineral deficiencies as we often hear.

Have dark spots: are usually caused by bleeding under the lamina, caused by a trauma.

Have lines / vertical streaks: it is a phenomenon linked to the natural aging process.

Have depressions: the cause is usually trauma to the matrix.

They are thick: the nail thickens and changes shape to resemble a claw (onigrifosi). E 'associated with aging, but can also be caused by the use of shoes too tight.

Stand apart: it is an intoxication by drugs or disease.
