Elastin is a protein structural connective tissue, contains two amino acids isodesmosina and desmosine, which ensure the elasticity of organs and tissues. And 'present mainly in the lungs, in the walls of arteries, ligaments, skin and intestine and allows a good elasticity of the organs and tissue of the human body.

The elastin form, together with the collagen and fibronectin (the protein responsible for scarring), the reticle supporting the skin.

The elastin fibers become longer for the application of a force even minor, and, at the cessation of the applied force, the shape and recover its original dimensions. In the dermis, the elastic fibers are interwoven with collagen fibers and this limits the potential relaxation of the skin, avoiding tears.

The body synthesizes elastin throughout development until the age of about 20 years. In adulthood, the body gradually reduces the production of elastin, causing the same loss of firmness, elasticity and firmness of the skin and the presence of wrinkles.

The loss of elastin at the level of pulmonary alveolar septa is the basis of the reduction of the elasticity typical of pulmonary emphysema. To avoid incurring this disease is important to stop smoking.
