The most advanced scientific research is undertaken to answer the question 'How can I avoid or delay the onset of diabetes?'

In the case of type 1 diabetes is still in the initial phase of experimentation.

In the case of type 2 diabetes, although the mechanisms are not yet fully understood, it is established that a proper lifestyle can be a useful means of prevention: the consistent exercise and reduction of abdominal fat contribute to delay and perhaps to prevent the onset of diabetes. This is called prevention 'primary'.

Prevention 'secondary'
is represented instead by the necessary measures to prevent the complications of diabetes: the more and the longer you keep your blood sugar at normal levels, the less likely the occurrence of microangiopathy (foot, eye, kidney). To reduce the risk of macroangiopatie (giving rise to heart attacks and strokes) is to be kept under the pressure, cholesterol and dyslipidemia.

Fewer heart attacks and mortality with early treatment of diabetes: the most important study

Improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetes brings significant benefits in the long run. This is demonstrated by the results of 30 years of the classic studies in diabetes - the UK Perspective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) - conducted by the University of Oxford.
Researchers at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism showed that early control of blood glucose reduces the risk of stroke (15%) and decreased mortality (13%), as well as having positive effects on the most typical complications of diabetes, as damage to the eyes (retinopathy) and kidneys.

The UKPDS was the first large-scale study (over 5,000 people enrolled and studied between 1977 and 1997) to show that complications of type 2 diabetes are not inevitable, but can be prevented effectively controlling blood sugar and blood pressure . The survey results have changed the course of diabetes and are the basis on which it is based with the current treatment of the disease. At the end of the study in 1997, patients were sent to the respective centers and continued their anti-diabetic therapy. However, over the next 10 years, the Oxford researchers have kept them under constant observation, without any changes to the treatment to which they were subjected.
The results show that, although blood glucose control is not the most obvious differences between the various groups they belonged to the patients at the time of the study, and these differences are reversed quickly, the benefit conferred on early intervention and retinopathy in both kidney damage, has remained unchanged over time: it is a real "memory" effect (legacy effect).

Moreover, and this is perhaps the most relevant data, further improvements have been achieved both in reducing the risk of a heart attack in both mortality.

"We now know with certainty that treat type 2 diabetes as early as possible the diagnosis not only reduces complications, but brings lasting benefits, thanks to a 'memory effect' of glycemic control," said Rury Holman of Oxford University, Head investigator of the study. "Without doubt, these results underscore the importance of early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention," he added.

The same effect, according to data presented today UKPDS, has not been achieved for blood pressure. David Matthews, President of the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, "For the blood sugar counts both as a patient to be cared for and checked today, and as it has been in the past. For the pressure, however, it seems important therapy alone in progress, and this confirms the importance of maintaining the pressure values always under control, to minimize the risk of complications ".

The prevention of chronic diseases

The World Health Organization published a report "Preventing chronic diseases: a vital investment"  in which she argues that global action on chronic disease prevention could save the lives of 36 million persons who may otherwise death by 2015.

In most cases, the risk factors of chronic diseases is little known and preventable. Three of the most important are an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and tobacco use. Collectively, these risk factors are increasing. The people in fact tend to convert your diet more and more towards a diet rich in fats and sugars. More than a billion people worldwide are now overweight or obese, and the WHO estimated that this number will rise to 1.5 billion by 2015, if you do not take immediate countermeasures. At the same time living and working conditions lead to greatly reduce physical activity. The increase in marketing and sales of tobacco and cigarettes, especially in low-and middle-income countries, leading to increased exposure to risks from smoking.

In the report, we discuss the many knowledge based on evidence of effectiveness, relating to measures that would allow inexpensive and effective rapid improvement of health status and for which the benefits are far greater than the costs.

Chromium Picolinate

Chromium is an important trace element for the human organism whose presence in food is reduced with the refining processes. The chromium picolinate favors the maintenance of a correct blood glucose levels because it helps the action of insulin and tissue sensitivity to it. For cardiovascular fitness has been shown to promote HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol checks, and the total triglycerides. For sportsmen: favors the absorption of amino acids in the cells and the physiological utilization of glucose for energy formation. Combined with a proper diet and exercise, promotes metabolism and muscle mass.

Chromium picolinate can be taken by power and by integration. And 'present in most foods, but especially in wheat germ, nuts, liver, broccoli, brewer's yeast and fungi.

Have been made over the years numerous studies related to 'use of chromium picolinate for blood glucose control in people with type II diabetes. Some of these studies have shown that chromium picolinate produces benefits in one or more standard parameters used for the monitoring of diabetes, without suffering side effects.
