It defines oily skin a skin condition characterized by an abundant production of sebum. Oily skin is easily recognizable: it is clearer than normal and seems thicker.

The causes of oily skin

The skin usually produces a waterproof film to defend: the sebum, which comes out of the hair follicles on the skin form a protective film which limits the damage due to external agents (dust, pollutants, wind, sunlight, etc.). In some cases the production of sebum may become excessive causing oily skin.

It is generally more common in adolescents. During adolescence fact seborrheic glands produce more sebum.

The excess sebum may also be due to hereditary characteristics or causes of hormonal imbalances that cause the glands to work too (as in the case of pregnant women). The production of sebum in fact is regulated by hormonal stimuli: androgen hormones such as testosterone and progesterone will stimulate secretion, while estrogens tend to hinder it. Even the hormones of the adrenal glands, including cortisol, increase the production of sebum, and this is the reason why stress is often the cause of the disorder.

When the sebum becomes too thick and waxy, hampers perspiration and clogs the hair follicles, creating a favorable environment for the development of microorganisms. This promotes the development of pimples and through the inflammation that causes can exacerbate acne, which has a different origin is also linked always to hormonal mechanisms.

Care for oily skin

Oily skin should be treated with mild, possibly with the addition substances that inhibit bacterial reproduction (azelaic acid or benzoyl peroxide). The cleaning must be particularly careful to avoid clogging of the follicles and the formation of comedones.

It should however be avoided or excessive cleansing based detergents, which stimulates the skin cells to produce even more sebum.

Once a week, after cleansing is good to dilate the pores with the use of hot water or a steam bath and then proceed to the application of a gentle exfoliator. To close the pores is sufficient the use of cold water.

Instead should be avoided lotions and oily cosmetics.

It may be useful to the exposure of the skin to sunlight, which tends to slow the production of sebum, with appropriate sun protection.

In cases where the imperfection is too high or there is a tendency to continue seborrheic dermatitis is advisable to contact your doctor to identify the most appropriate treatment.
