Researchers at Newcastle University have identified Tiron , an antioxidant that offers total protection against certain types of sun damage and could help our skin to stay young longer.

Published in The FASEB Journal , describes the search as in laboratory tests was compared to both the protection offered against both UVA and against oxidative stress by various antioxidants , some of which are found in foods or cosmetics. While UVB radiation easily cause sunburn, UVA rays penetrate deeper and damage our DNA and generating free radicals that break down collagen, and thus resulting in the loss of elasticity and firmness of the skin.

The group of researchers found that those were the most powerful antioxidants that act on the mitochondria, the " powerhouses " of the cell . They compared these mitochondrial targeted antioxidants to other non-specific antioxidants , which act on the entire cell , and have found that the most powerful antioxidant mitochondrial was Tiron , able to provide 100 % protection of the cell of the skin against UVA sun damage and oxidative stress .

Mark Birch- Machin , Professor of Molecular Dermatology at Newcastle University and lead author of the research, said: " Finding out that Tiron offers complete protection against UVA damage is exciting and promising , however, it is necessary to carry out further study and test the toxicity in humans. "

Tiron on this discovery provides a basis for studying an antioxidant that may be safely used in foods and cosmetics .

Our skin ages also because of the constant exposure to sunlight , as the sun's ultraviolet radiation penetrates into the cells and increases the number of harmful free radicals , particularly reactive oxygen species . Excess free radicals damage DNA inside our cells . Over time , this process can lead to the accumulation of mutations that accelerate the ' aging and destroy the supporting fibers of the skin : collagen and elastin , causing wrinkles, loss of tone and elasticity ... Not only that, recent studies suggest that the damage caused by reactive oxygen species can initiate and exacerbate the development of skin cancers.

Some antioxidants such as green tea , resveratrol , turmeric , lycopene ... as well as some components in dermo-cosmetic creams , are known to counteract this damage within the cells : they can slow down the damage and the rate of aging and potentially lower the rate of other skin lesions induced by the sun.
