Western Europe , according to data from Euromonitor International, represented the fourth largest market in 2011 (12.5%) for the sale of dietary supplements , after the United States ( 26.2% ), Japan ( 22.2%) , and China (12.7%) , amounting to approximately € 7.8 billion . With an average annual rate of growth of 3.2 % between 2006 and 2011 , Western Europe has indeed increased its sales of dietary supplements , but not at the same pace of the most dynamic markets (United States 6.8%) China ( 9%) and some emerging markets of Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East ( +9.5 %). The category most purchased in Europe is that of vitamins . Pharmacies and drugstores , traditional channels , channels are confirmed prevalent (62 %). Non-traditional channels such as the Internet began to assume some importance (17%) with a trend of steady growth.

In May 2012, EFSA , the European Food Safety Authority , after reviewing thousands of health claims submitted by the member countries , has compiled a list of 222 health claims ( European Regulation 432/2012 ) which can be provided on supplements food .

In Italy , to enter a supplement on the market, the manufacturer must notify the label to the Ministry of Health , which assesses the suitability of the product in terms of eligibility and compliance with the directions of the ingredients on the package . In the event of a positive outcome of the procedure , the product is entered in the register of food supplements . Otherwise, the company will be asked to provide clarifications / additions . If the product does not get ministerial approval can not be placed on the market .
