Choose the right size and the right color of the dishes can help you eat less.

Koert van Ittersum, the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia, USA), and colleagues asked 225 students participating in the survey to pay a certain amount of tomato soup in one of the following dishes of different sizes: three smaller, three more large, and one control. Consistent with the researchers' expectations, participants served less amounts of soup into bowls, smaller and larger amount of soup into bowls larger.

An optical illusion tends to relate to the size of the portions of the dishes. Subsequent experiments have shown that this perception is almost impossible to eliminate with education, awareness, or practice. It is calculated that larger dishes to serve induce quantities of food up to 31% more than normal.

The team says that one of the few ways to reduce this perception is through the color: that change the color of a tablecloth or a plate. In a field study, participants were asked to serve white or red sauce for the pasta on a large white plate or a large plate red. Changing the color of the plate so as to create a high contrast, reduces the portions of 21%, and changing the color of the tablecloth of 10%.

Today, the average size of the plates is 23% greater than the dishes served during the year 1900. The study's authors point out that eating just 50 calories a day could result in five pounds more each year.

Opt for smaller plates, therefore, can contribute to a more streamlined.
