A new study in mice reveals that stem cells help rejuvenate your muscles after resistance exercise.
 

By injecting a special type of stem cells in the muscles of the legs of the animal before performing exercise (exercise-like contractions and stretching performed during resistance training in humans), the researchers were able to increase the rate of repair and to foster the growth and strength of the muscles after exercise performance in animals.
 

The results, described in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, could in the future lead to new interventions to combat age-related decline in muscle structure and function, said Marni Boppart, University of Illinois, who led research.
 

"We have an interest in understanding how the muscle responds to exercise, and which cellular components contributing to the increase in repair and growth as a result of exercise," he said. "But the primary goal of our laboratory is to understand how we can regenerate the muscles of the elderly to prevent physical disability that occurs with age, and to increase the quality of life in general."
 

"Skeletal muscle is a very complex organ, highly innervated and vascularized, and unfortunately all of these different tissues become dysfunctional with age," said Boppart. "Therefore, the development of an intervention that can heal different tissues is ideally necessary to reverse the decline in muscle mass and function related to age.
