An American study has examined the relationship between seven parameters for ideal cardiovascular health, as defined by the American Heart Association (AHA), and the incidence of tumors.

It 'was a significant inverse association between the number of parameters for ideal cardiovascular health and cancer incidence. Participants who met the objectives for six to seven health parameters ideals had a 50% lower risk of cancer.

Using the data of 'Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) with almost 20 years of follow-up, the researchers found that those who had maintained for years compared to six or seven of the parameters defined by the AHA had a lower risk of 51 % of cancer than those who had not complied with and maintained the parameters. The study was published online in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

Unfortunately, only 2.7% of the study participants, has maintained membership of six or seven parameters of health, said Laura J. Rasmussen-Torvik, PhD, MPH, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.

Dr. Rasmussen-Torvik and colleagues agreed, saying that their results are "consistent with other analyzes that have demonstrated a significant association between adherence to guidelines of a lifestyle similar to the behaviors endorsed by the AHA and a lower incidence of cancer" .

The risk of incident cancer gradually decreases with respect for the health parameters:

One or two parameters-HR 0.79 (0.64 to 0.98)
Three parameters - HR 0.74 (0.59 to 0.91);

Four parameters - HR 0.67 (0.54 to 0.84)
Five parameters - HR 0.61 (0.48 to 0.79)
Six or seven parameters-HR 0.49 (0.35 to 0.69)

Risk ratios were adjusted for age, sex, race.

The goal of the initiative is to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20%, reducing death from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20%.

To achieve this goal, the concept of ideal cardiovascular health has been defined on the basis of seven factors or health behaviors: smoking, physical activity, obesity, diet, total cholesterol, blood pressure and sugar level in the blood.

The study has involved 13,253 participants from ARIC database who reported having a history of cancer. The average age of participants was 54 years, with a predominance of women.

The percentage of participants in each category of health was perfect:

71.5% - smoke
51.8% - blood sugar
41.6% - blood pressure
37.9% - physical activity
36.9% - total cholesterol
33.2% - body mass index (BMI)
5.3% - ideal diet

Eliminating it as a parameter ideal not smoking, the risk of cancer is increased for certain parameters, reflecting the strong influence of the factor smoke on the development of the disease.

"It seems that the levels of smoke are responsible for a large part of the negative association between cardiovascular health and cancer incidence," the researchers said.

The researchers concluded that their findings "should encourage the AHA to cooperate in the fight against cancer and other chronic diseases widespread."
