Recessions can have long-term negative effects , not only financial . A new study has found that people affected by an economic downturn in middle age are at risk of mental decline.

The researchers examined data from 12,000 people over the age of 50 years in 11 European countries . The men aged between 50 and 74 years who have experienced four or more recessions had lower scores in relation to mental abilities such as memory, speech and math than those who had not experienced any recession. The research findings were published online in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

The impact of the recession on women appeared to occur at a younger age , as is clear from the study.

The loss of a job , having to accept a part-time job or a lower pay are among the consequences of the recession that most affect (negatively ) the cognitive functions of individuals , suggested Anja Leist , a researcher at the University of Luxembourg. Factors that are particularly burdensome for those over 50 years and has a reduced ability to adapt to change.

Previous research has suggested that good working conditions can help people build a "mental reservation", which affects mental performance in older age.
