The term "caregiver" means someone who cares and of course refers to all family members who assist their joint ill and / or disabled. Caregivers of patients with dementia are the great majority.

The profile of the family caregiver in America is changing, as well as the aging of the population, according to a new research study conducted by the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, titled "Caregiving in the US 2015". The typical family caregiver is a woman of average age 49 who takes care of a family member.

The caregiver is committed to a high number of hours, it dealt with a family for an average of five years and expects to continue to deal for another 5 years. Almost half of these workers complain a strong emotional stress (46%).

With a median household income of $ 45,700, caregivers report not only emotional tension, but also financial difficulties. The Caregivers also report difficulty in finding services, such as meals on wheels, transportation, home health services ...

Today, nearly a quarter of caregivers Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 and are in equal proportion males or females. At the other end of the spectrum, caregivers over the age of 75 years or more are mostly women.

"We are particularly concerned that not enough is being done to support family carers in the public or private sector," said Gail Gibson Hunt, president and CEO of the National Alliance for Caregiving. "There is a double-edged sword when we fail to support the servers, because we put at risk both the caregiver is the patient."

"As a previous AARP research has shown, we are faced with an obstacle," said Susan Reinhard, senior vice president and director of the AARP Public Policy Institute "By mid-century, there will be more people needing assistance, because of 'aging population. "

Profile of the caregiver emerging from the research:

60% of caregivers are women. The typical caregiver is a 49-year-old woman for a 69 year-old relative, probably his mother.
    40% of caregivers are men.
34% of caregivers have a full time job, while 25% have part-time work. Caregivers who work do so for 34.7 hours per week on average.
Caregivers are next to the person in need on average for four years, 24.4 hours a week, to help with activities such as bathing, dressing, doing the housework, handle finances.
32% provides at least 21 hours of care a week, with an average 62.2 hours of care per week.
38% of caregivers suffering from emotional stress as a result of caregiving.
