The Annual Statistical Report on Cancer of the American Cancer Society believes that there has been a 22% decline in death rates from cancer in the past two decades, which has led to avoid the more than 1.5 million cancer deaths that would have occurred if peak rates have persisted.

The researchers argue that the steady decline in the death rate from cancer is the result of fewer smokers, as well as the progress in cancer prevention, early diagnosis to treatment.

Yet, "Cancer Facts & Figures 2015" warns that about 589,430 Americans will die of cancer this year, equal to about 1,600 deaths a day. Numbers still too high! The most common causes of cancer death are lung cancer, prostate cancer and colorectal cancer in men and lung, breast and colorectal cancer in women. These four cancers account for almost half of all cancer deaths, with more than a quarter (27%) of all cancer deaths due to lung cancer. For women, breast cancer alone accounts for 29% of all cases of cancer among women in the United States
