Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of disability among adults and the elderly.

Deborah A. Levine, a researcher at the University of Michigan (Michigan, USA), and colleagues analyzed data on 4,908 men and women older than 65, who were enrolled in the Health and Retirement Study.

The team assessed for changes in cognition comprehensive before and after the stroke. The analysis of the data revealed that having a stroke reduces the age brain function of a person of almost 8 years: the memory is slower and so does the speed of thought.

Researchers sottolineno then: "These results show the importance of a healthy cognitive aging, and therefore the importance of prevention of stroke to reduce the risk of cognitive decline."
