Suffer from excessive and uncontrollable worry, accompanied by a series of physical symptoms including fatigue, muscle tension, irritability and poor sleep. And 'what is called Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and damage the health and quality of life for many people, women in particular.A new study from the University of Georgia (USA) has shown that regular exercise can significantly reduce anxiety symptoms in patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder

In a study published in the online edition of November 22, 2011 Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, researchers studied 30 sedentary women, aged 18-37 years who were diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, subjecting them to six weeks of aerobic training and lifting weights. The women performed two weekly sessions of weight lifting or exercise bike.

The team observed that women who have done the program of exercise - and in particular those who carried out lifting weights, were more likely to reduce Generalized Anxiety Disorder. In particular, the symptoms, the main problem among individuals affected by Generalized Anxiety Disorder, were significantly reduced among the participants.

Matthew Herring, a research associate at the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, said: "Our findings add to the growing body of evidence, the positive effects of exercise on anxiety. Our study is the first study randomized, controlled, focused on the effects of exercise on individuals diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD in English). Given the social impact of GAD and drawbacks of current treatments, including the cost and potential side effects, Our results are particularly interesting because they suggest that exercise is a viable solution, well tolerated, with low risk and no side effect to reduce the symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder. "

The study also examined the potential interactions between exercise and drugs used to treat generalized anxiety disorder. Half of the participants in each group were given drugs for the treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder in the exercise program. Have been reported anxiety symptoms is attenuated at the same rate for those taking drugs is among those who did not take drugs.

"Regular exercise has the power to help women suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder, although resistant to treatment with drugs," said Dr. O 'Connor.
