The biological connection between the personality of an individual and its ability to regulate stress has been unknown until now.
But Joelle Jobin, Concordia University (Canada), and colleagues found that there is an association between optimism and a lower secretion of cortisol, the stress hormone

The researchers tracked 135 older adults for six years, and five samples of saliva collected daily from each subject (to monitor the levels of cortisol). The age group over 60 was chosen because older adults often find themselves facing a number of stressors related. 

Participants were asked to report relating to the level of stress they perceived day-to-day, and to identify themselves each day as optimistic or pessimistic. The team observed that: "In the days when people experience a higher average stress, the stress response to the pessimists was very high and showed difficulties to bring their cortisol levels to normal. Optimists, however, in similar circumstances , showed a greater ability to manage stress. The team therefore maintains a relationship between positive and stress.



Jobin Lastly it is difficult to classify hormone complex as "good" or "bad," and it is the case of cortisol, which we call 'stress hormone', but it is also the hormone of our 'get up and do things', and therefore we can secernerne more if we are in love or focused on what we are doing.



The study was recently published in the journal "Health Psychology American Psychological Association."



New research from the Department of Psychology at Concordia is deepening understanding of how optimists and pessimists manage adversity. The results show that cortisol, a stress hormone, tends to be more stable in people more positive.
