People with cancer are at a higher risk of other chronic diseases, according to a new study from Flinders University.

Published in the Medical Journal of Australia, the study found a higher incidence of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol in individuals cancer survivors, with a particularly high prevalence among men.

The study compared the overall health of 2,160 Australian adult cancer survivors with 4100 adults without cancer. The senior auore of the study, Professor Bogda Koczwara, the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer says that the study is the first of its kind to show that cancer survivors may be at greater risk of developing other chronic diseases compared to those who have not had cancer.

"We found that there was a much higher prevalence of chronic diseases in the group of cancer compared to non-cancer group," says Professor Koczwara. "This result has been that, regardless of the style of life of people, such as nutrition, physical activity, which was the same in cancer survivors and in the control group."

Professor Koczwara says it is not yet clear whether people with chronic conditions are more susceptible to cancer, or if cancer and its treatments make people more susceptible to other chronic conditions. "Our data do not allow us to determine if it is statostati cancer diagnosed before or if they had a chronic condition before, so we can not yet say whether the cancer causes chronic health conditions or chronic diseases cause cancer. But there is a correlation between the two conditions. "

Overall, the research highlights the need for health professionals to ensure the care of cancer survivors appropriately, monitoring the riscchio of chronic diseases. "
