A recent study has demonstrated that the elimination of physical activity can reduce overall rates of death from any cause at least 5.3 million per year.

Note that the overall weight of the mortality due to physical inactivity is similar to that of cigarette smoke.
The burden of global mortality of physical inactivity - more than 5.3 million deaths a year - is similar in fact 5 million deaths / year due to cigarette smoking.

On a global scale, physical inactivity was associated with a 6% incidence of coronary heart disease (range 3.2% to 7.8%), 7% the incidence of type 2 diabetes (range 3.9 % to 9.6%), 10% in the incidence of breast cancer (range 5.6% to 14.1%), and 10% incidence of colon cancer (range 5.7% to 13.8 %), according to I-Min Lee, MD, of Harvard Medical School, and colleagues.

Physical inactivity was defined as activity levels lower than the recommendations of the World Health Organization - that is, less than 150 minutes / week of moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking.

The researchers found that by eliminating inactivity globally, the world population would earn about 0.68 years of life expectancy (range 0.41 to 0.95), and that inaction has produced 5.3 million of € 57 million deaths worldwide in 2008.

The researchers have stated that the global elimination of inactivity is unlikely, but with a reduction of 10% or 25% of the overall rates of inactivity, it is estimated that 533,000 and 1.3 million deaths, respectively, due to all the causes of death would be prevented.
