In collaboration with the University of Tsukuba (Japan), the Yaskawa Electric Corporation, better known as a leading manufacturer of industrial robots, she has developed a machine to measure the levels of fitness in older people based on how they move their feet.

The machine is presented as a treadmill, but is equipped with 3,600 sensors on a portion 60 square centimeters.

A user completes five types of movements, including maintaining the balance on an inclined plane and walking in place, and the machine evaluates the sense of balance and muscle strength on a scale from 1 to 5.

Kiyoji Tanaka, a researcher at the University of Tsukuba, said that: "The muscular strength and sense of balance are key factors for maintaining a wide range of activities. This should help to prevent age-related diseases"
The machine allows nurses to verify the physical abilities of the elderly simply. Not only that, knowing and seeing quantified their physical capacity, enables elderly people to be more aware and to improve.
