A team from the University of California / San Diego School of Medicine (California, USA) studied the role of CD33rSiglecs in life. Ajit Varki and colleagues report a correlation between the number of copies of the gene CD33rSIGLEC and maximum lifespan in 14 species of mammals. Furthermore, they found that mice lacking one copy of the gene CD33rSIGLEC do not live as long as normal mice, have higher levels of free radicals and most molecular damage.


The study's authors argue that: "The removal of Siglec causes the development of signs of aging exaggerated at the molecular, structural and cognitive. We found that accelerated aging is due both to an unbalanced ROS metabolism, both in a loss of value secondary in the detoxification of reactive molecules, leading, ultimately, to an increase in cell damage DNA, proteins and lipids. Our data suggest that the CD33rSiglecs has co-evolved in mammals to obtain a better management of oxidative stress during inflammation, which in turn reduces the molecular damage and extends the duration of life. "
