Scientists at Aston University have discovered a potential molecular link between Irisin , a recently identified hormone that is released from the muscle after periods of exercise, and the aging process .

The hormone Irisin is naturally present in humans and is able to reprogram the fat cells of the body to burn energy instead of storing it. This process increases the metabolic rate and promotes the maintenance of healthy body weight .

The research group led by Dr. James Brown, the Research Center for Healthy Aging Aston , has shown that there is a significant link between irisin levels in the blood and a marker of biological aging, determined by the length of telomeres . Telomeres are small regions are at the end of chromosomes, the length of short telomeres has been linked to many age-related diseases including cancer , heart disease and Alzheimer 's disease.

Using a population of healthy , non-obese , the team showed that individuals who had high levels of Irisin also had longer telomeres . The discovery provides a potential molecular link important.

Dr. James Brown said: " Exercise is known to have wide-ranging benefits , from cardiovascular protection , to weight loss . Recent research has suggested that exercise can protect people from physical and mental decline caused by ' aging . Results now provide an indication of the presence of a molecular link between the practice of regular physical activity and a healthy aging process . "
